Posted June 29, 2019 06:30:00 In their prime, INXS, with Michael Hutchence — the magnetic frontman with the jangling, soaring voice and glorious tangle of curly locks — made some of the biggest hits of their era, notching seven top 10 hits between 1986 and 1988, reaching number one with Need You Tonight in January 1988. Yet more than 20 years since his suicide, Hutchence had become pop culture shorthand. For louche, mercurial rock star oozing with sex appeal; drug abuser and home wrecker hounded by the tabloid press; a misunderstood death that crossed into the realm of urban legend to land as the butt of jokes. But in a story that's been retold and rehashed in the press, TV documentaries, drama series and reality competitions, one key piece of context was missing: brain injuries caused by a one-punch attack during a late-night pizza run in Copenhagen, 1992. The story is told by supermodel Helena Christensen, Hutchence's partner from 1991 to 1995, and backed up by a coroner's report. Both were given to the makers of a new documentary, Mystify: Michael Hutchence, directed by Melbourne filmmaker and long-time INXS collaborator Richard Lowenstein. Christensen recounts that a taxi driver "yelled at Michael to move, got out of his car and punched him. He fell backwards and hit the curb. In the aftermath, Hutchence insisted on leaving the hospital, and spent the next month in Christensen's apartment vomiting and refusing food. His manner also changed. "This dark, very angry side came out in him. she says. A month later, the couple travelled to Paris to meet a specialist, who concluded Hutchence had permanently lost his senses of taste and smell and sustained multiple brain contusions. Keeping secrets While Hutchence was public about no longer being able to smell and taste, he swore Christensen to secrecy about the rest. "She didn't even tell her parents for 20 years, so her interview was very revealing. And then the coroner's report was even more revealing — of what he was hiding. Lowenstein tells RN's Stop Everything! I think it was incredibly emotional finding that out, especially for the band members. They came to a screening and they didn't know the full extent until they saw the film. Lowenstein says he obtained Hutchence's unedited coroner's report through British journalist sources and showed it to neurologists and psychologists. "I don't think anyone had seen that unedited coroner's report before, but that was a revelation. he says. They] rang up in the middle of the night saying: It's very obvious what happened. This is a perfect storm of suicide risk, what's here in the report. Putting the puzzle together For Lowenstein and film collaborators at Ghost Pictures who worked on INXS video clips and Mystify, that revelation has been a transformative piece of the "jigsaw puzzle" of putting Hutchence back together. "After his assault in Copenhagen in 92, he came back and filmed some videos, and all of us at Ghost, everyone who worked with him, saw a very different Michael. And we just [thought. There's something wrong. he says. "We didn't know if it was going to be permanent. And then we saw him go off the rails. You'd see him every three months and you'd go: Whoa, that's not the Michael we knew three months ago. Lowenstein directed Hutchence in the 1986 cult classic Dogs in Space, and more than a dozen INXS video clips, including Burn for You, Need You Tonight, Never Tear Us Apart and Suicide Blonde. He watched with dismay as each commercial retelling of Hutchence's life made it to air. "I don't think his artistry and his personality has been respected. I think it's been exploited. Lowenstein says. "I think it's been used to sell back catalogue and I think it's been used to sell tabloid newspapers. With film collaborators Lynn-Maree Milburn and Andrew de Groot, Lowenstein turned to their extensive personal archives. Discovering authenticity, 30 years later "We just all sat there and thought: There's honestly nothing of the guy we remember — that we recognise — out there. And we just we had all the footage in our archive, in literally my attic. And we thought, we should do something authentic about him. he says. Mystify is over 90 minutes of montage, with footage sourced from interviews, music video outtakes, and home videos, much of those shot by Hutchence. There are joyful moments of discovery, like film capturing a young and deeply loved-up Hutchence and Kylie Minogue on holiday. "I knew I had an attic full of the outtakes. but I didn't actually know or remember what was actually in those tins (of film. Lowenstein says. "When I sent it all off to the lab, I suddenly get this phone call in the middle of the night, saying: Do you realise there's all this footage of Kylie and Michael on a boat in Hong Kong harbour. Michael had a little 16mm camera that we bought him back in the day as a present and he would come back to Melbourne and hand me these little Kodak boxes — you know the little yellow boxes of film? — and we would put them in with all the music video rushes. And then they just sat there for 30 years. I had a totally forgotten that they were there. Mystify has no on-screen talking heads, but a stream of audio interviews runs over the montage. During the relationship between Minogue and Hutchence, previously unseen privately shot footage shows them in Hong Kong harbour, on board the orient express, and at Hutchences home in the south of France. In the early 1990s an incident occurred while bicycling on holiday in Copenhagen with then girlfriend Helena Christensen, where Hutchence gets shoved to the ground by a taxi driver, hitting his head on the curb and losing consciousness. According to Christensen, Hutchence was rushed to hospital and woke up determined to leave. The injury resulted in Hutchence having permanent loss of sense of smell and taste. Clips show Yates and Michael Hutchence in a 1985 interview on Channel 4 's rock magazine programme The Tube and many years later on The Big Breakfast interview in October 1994. Recollections with voice-overs in the film include Michele Bennett, Kylie Minogue, siblings Rhett and Tina Hutchence, father Kelland Hutchence, stepmother Susie, producer Nick Launay, Bono and INXS band members, composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, bassist Garry Gary Beers and drummer Jon Farriss. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] Plans for a biographical drama film about Michael Hutchence were being developed with a script written by Australian film-maker Richard Lowenstein. Lowenstein had previously collaborated with Hutchence in Dogs in Space and INXS music videos. The film was to feature an actor as Hutchence, however the idea of casting someone proved very difficult and with the announcement of the miniseries INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, it made the director switch to an archival documentary. [8] The documentary film gathered early development funding and support by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Screen Australia and Film Victoria. [9] A pitch trailer was produced and shown at the 2016 Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne where BBC Music took interest. [9] In July 2016, it was announced that a documentary film about the singer-songwriter Michael Hutchence had the official support of INXS band members and manager Chris Murphy, with Richard Lowenstein signed on to direct. [10] 11] 12] 13] The director conducted the first interview (for the biopic research) in 2010 with U2 lead singer Bono who were on tour in Melbourne. Band members from INXS were then interviewed and filmed in 2011, gradually building up an archive of footage. A day later, a deal was struck to use nine INXS tracks. Noise from an anxious, excited crowd buzzes in the background as the lithe musician casually throws on a jacket emblazoned with the word "HUTCH" on the back. As he heads toward the stage, the dull hum of the audience's cheering turns into a goose bump-inducing roar. The movie then shifts into INXS breaking into the elegant opening chords of "Never Tear Us Apart. Hutchence looks intense and focused as he sings the opening verse, which culminates with his Elvis Presley-like lip curl and snarl on the line "Never tear us apart. This scenario was a familiar one for Hutchence. During the '80s and into the early '90s, the Australian sextet INXS was one of the biggest rock bands in the world. In the U. S. alone, the group had seven Top 10 Billboard Top 100 hits, including the No. 1 song "Need You Tonight. and more than double rock radio hits. All told, they've sold more than 50 million albums globally, and played massive places at their peak — including, as documented in the recently reissued 1991 concert film "Live Baby Live. Wembley Stadium. Still, INXS' commercial fortunes declined during the '90s — and the band itself never fully recovered their momentum after Hutchence died by suicide in 1997, although they carried on into the 2010s. However, today it's easy to forget just how big the band truly was at its commercial peak. There are many reasons for this, although a recent New York Times article, The Internet Swallowed INXS. Can a Movie Rescue Its Legacy. touched on how shifting industry trends — including and especially changing music formats — has blunted the band's impact. "If you look at someone who is comparable to Michael Hutchence, like Jim Morrison from the Doors, that band didn't suffer the same sudden changes in technology as INXS did. Giles Martin, the producer who remastered the "Live Baby Live" sound, told the paper. Where this diminished legacy also becomes clear is on the streaming platforms Spotify and Apple Music, both of which lack releases from INXS's catalog. The band's first two albums (1980's self-titled effort and 1981's "Underneath the Colours" have always had a lower stateside profile, so it makes sense they'd be absent. However, the 1984 album "The Swing" — which features well-known songs such as "Original Sin" and "I Send a Message" — isn't available. Neither is "Elegantly Wasted. Early on, the group was of a piece with modern pop and rock musicians: wiry new wavers XTC, quirky romantics Split Enz, the pub rock of Elvis Costello. Appropriately, in early live footage, Hutchence was already a mesmerizing presence, all unassuming charisma and confidence. Thanks to relentless touring, he and the rest of INXS gained self-assurance quickly, with Hutchence in particular blooming into a force that exuded vulnerability and strength. By the time of 1982's "Shabooh Shoobah. which featured the band's U. breakthrough singles "Don't Change" and "The One Thing. they were an ace live act. It helped, of course, that INXS' hits sounded relentlessly modern, and transcended rigid pop and rock boundaries. Some songs boasted snappy riffs, funky grooves and brassy horns ( Suicide Blonde. What You Need. others sailed along on surging tempos and colorful flourishes ( The One Thing. Don't Change. And INXS never stayed in one place long: The multiplatinum smash albums "Kick" and "X" embraced contemporary sounds, highlighted by the swinging, piano-driven "Mystify. horn-peppered, hip-hop-tinged "Calling All Nations" and soulful rocker "Disappear. In the '90s, meanwhile, tender ballads "Not Enough Time" and "Beautiful Girl" coexisted with grungier moments ( The Gift. Rolling Stones-like struts ( Please (You Got That…. featuring Ray Charles) and danceable tunes with modern production flourishes ( Taste It. The documentary "Mystify" — which is released digitally on Jan. 21 and on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 31 — goes a long way to illustrating the greatness of Hutchence and INXS. Written and directed by a friend of his, Richard Lowenstein, the film is understandably heartbreaking, as the narrative arc starts with his childhood and early years and builds to his death. However, Mystify" avoids sensationalizing Hutchence's life — and, in fact, criticizes the tabloid frenzies that followed his romances — and instead illuminates a more three-dimensional, nuanced view of Hutchence's personality. He was shy and introspective (in fact, report cards called him a "dreamer. yet he hungered for fame and came alive while performing; in fact, he was instrumental in writing INXS vocal melodies as well as lyrics, and bandmate Andrew Farriss praised how Hutchence developed his vocal skills. He loved philosophy, literature, and all sorts of music, those close to him shared: The Supremes, James Brown, the Beatles' John Lennon, T. Rex's "Electric Warrior. Aretha Franklin's voice. And although moody, he was also tender and sensitive, and preferred having a family-like atmosphere around him. Wisely, instead of having people from Hutchence's life as talking heads, Mystify" chooses to make sure only their voices are heard, which puts the focus on the documentary's visuals: intimate movies of him as a child and adult, including in the studio with INXS and also hanging with girlfriends; vintage concert footage; and touching family photographs. As a result, the documentary keeps the focus on Hutchence's vibrant life and legacy, and mitigates sad moments; for example, the film sheds more light on what's now understood to be a traumatic brain injury Hutchence received in 1992, which people close to him note altered his behavior. In recent years, Hutchence's absence has been felt more acutely, as INXS has been covered by acts such as Courtney Barnett, the Killers, Bruce Springsteen, and members of Green Day. "He raised the bar for both myself and Bono. former R. E. M. vocalist Michael Stipe told The Guardian in early 2018, noting that the band's "Strange Currencies" nods to INXS. "The middle eight of that is completely taken from INXS and from Michael. He was such an amazing rock star. " Appropriately, Mystify" ends with Hutchence in a more intimate setting: working on the song "Mystify" with bandmate Andrew Farriss in a spacious studio settig. The clip is a color version of the actual "Mystify" video, and shows the frontman focused on nailing the song's vocal part as Farriss plays the piano. This gives way, once again, to joyous performance footage of INXS, so audiences leave the movie having one last glimpse of Hutchence onstage, beaming and in his element.
